Military Volunteers
In early 1943, military recruiters began coming to Topaz, looking for volunteers from the Nisei men. These men had not been allowed to serve in the army, but suddenly they were not only allowed but wanted. They had to serve in separate units from white men and Issei men still could not volunteer.
Set Free
In early 1943, citizens who had somewhere to go and a way of supporting themselves were allowed to leave the camps, but first they needed to send a request to the government and have it approved. By March there was a logjam of requests waiting for clearance. The government took quite a while to go through them all, and the internees had to wait patiently. It often took several months. The last internee left Topaz on December 31, 1945.
